Description
A new Solo Sonata for the cello With the right repertoire, the cello proves to be an astonishingly expressive and versatile solo instrument. The sonata I composed in 2020 explores everything the cello has to offer, and I am delighted to finally release a video performance of it. Seeking maximum polyphony as well as harmonic and melodic beauty, this work consists of three contrasting movements. As a young cellist, I always admired the finest violinists for the effortless and natural way they made their instruments sing. Today, I often like to imagine that the cello is nearly as capable of rich polyphony as the piano, and I sometimes play as though I were seated at a magnificent Steinway. I draw much inspiration from great pianists, but also from outstanding singers and, of course, from the symphonic orchestra—with its virtually unlimited polyphony, color, and range. Another idea that fascinates me is the concept of the one-man band: everything—from composition to performance, recording, editing, and publishing—is done by a single person. These are the thoughts behind the project that comes to fruition today. I invite you to discover the rest for yourself in this new Sonata for solo cello!
